As Salaamu Alikum,

I was checking Twitter this morning and I found something disturbing from @muslimmatters Twitter feed. One of our fellow Muslimahs, Aisah Khan, is missing and the family needs your duas as well as information leading to her safe return, inshaallah.

Aisha Khan was last seen on Friday, December 16th on the University of Kansas campus. On the morning she went missing, she sent a text to her sister saying that she was being followed by a man who was drunk. When her sister went to the campus to pick her up, the sister found her Bookbag and her cell phone.

Aisha Khan is 19 years old, 5'2 inches tall, and weighs 120 lbs. She was last seen wearing a yellow and black shirt, black sweat pants and a black head scarf. She may have also been wearing glasses. She was wearing a black jacket beneath a longer black and white coat.

The Khan family is offering a $10,000 reward for anyone who knows any information as to the whereabouts of Aisha Khan. Anyone with information is asked to call the Kansas CrimeStoppers TIPS line at 816-474-TIPS (874-474-8477).

AsSalaamu Alikum,

WhenI took my shahadah two years ago, I remember one of the Muslim brothers leavingme with a very valuable naseeha- that Islam is a perfect religion but it’s thepeople who will try your faith. It is this that I have to remember when the trials and tribulations come-even those you never expect.

Iam now twice divorced- and seven months pregnant. It is very exciting time in my life becauseAllah (swt) blessed me with a sacred gift that too many women take for granted –motherhood. But being that it is excting time it is also a trying time for meas well. I am in my second divorce and it’s painfully obvious that being on mysecond divorce means that I have not learned anything from my first. And nowthere is a baby girl involved who has to unintentionally pay for the choicesthat have been made. One of biggest fears is playing out right before my veryeyes- that I will be a single mom. I fought so hard to keep things Islamic aspossible between me and her father, for the sake of Allah and to make sure ourdaughter had her father around. Plus, I never wanted my daughter to experiencethe pain that I went through of not having a father around. And that is what isbreaking my heart the most as a mom- that my daughter will not have her fatheraround because he refuses to acknowledge and take responsibility for his ownflesh and blood. I pray that my ex will see the errors of his choices, do whatis correct in Islam and take care of our daughter. Amin.

WhenI think about the examples of single motherhood in Islam, two women stick outin my mind -Hajar and Maryam (peace and blessings be upon them both). When herhusband Ibrahim had to leave Hajar in the desert with their son Ismai’l, Hajarhad to truly rely on Allah to provide them difficulty for their ease. She rodeback and forth seven times in between two rocks, trying to find water so shecan feed her infant son. After her seventh attempt, Hajar fell exhausted with Ishmai'l in her arms. While Ishmai'l was crying, he tapped his heel and water came out of the ground. And that's how Zamzam water came about.

As for Maryam, she had Isa (peace be upon them both) inspite of having to do it alone and having to endure labor without any pain medication.

May Allah guide me through this difficult time and help me find wisdom, understanding and blessing in it. Amin.

Often as Muslims we tend to forget that sometimes the biggest challenges to our deen is not what we do when times our good but what we do when times are hard. It's almost been about two months since I posted an entry and it's not like I have not been trying. I have been struggling to put my posts in a way that is both helpful and strong, inshaallah.

The last post I put up was in May, so it's been about two months since I put up anything. So today I kept thinking about the story of ZamZam. It's more than a story about water. It's a story about how a woman named Hagar persevered when times got hard for the sake of Allah and for the sake of her newborn son, Ismail. The clip below is an excerpt about that faithful day.

As Salaamu alikum,
Ever since the age of 13, I have been battling depression and anxiety. I have always dealt with it without meds, in large part because I knew the side effects may make me worse than I already am. But lately, I'm finding that option is becoming harder and harder to do . Today and everyday I should be thankful to Allah that I'm alive, that I have a new husband and I'm in school. But there are some days that I get the blues and other days I get stressed out. And that's when things are going good. Lately, it seems that my anxiety and depression are getting harder to manage without resorting to medication and therapy. Before I was Muslim, it would be easy to go on the meds , go to therapy and be fine. However I have to look at this Islamicaly as well.

As always, depression and anxiety are tools that Satan uses to detract believers from following the deen and strengthening their iman. However, anxiety and depression are conditions that require appropriate management for these are life long conditions. What I am finding is that in the Islamic community, there is a seal of slilence and backlash going on when it comes to mental illnesses in general. This seal of silence and backlash is causing Muslimahs, Muslims and their families to suffer and in most cases choose not to get help, whetehr through medication, therapy, or even natural alternatives.

At First, i thought about getting a percription for antidepressants. I thought, one or two pills a day would make me happy and not feel gloomy. However, as this ad explains , the side effects will make you run for the hills.

Plus antidepressants are now coming with a warning that they increase the chances that you will kill yourself while under the medication. But to lighten it up, they say that the suicide risk only happens when teenagers and young adults are on the medication. Either way, I found it disturbing. I thought the purpose of meds was to make me feel better, not worse.

Inshallah, I will get better and find a way to be happy with out it being more detrimental to my health and my deen. May Allah help me find a way to navigate through my storms and do it with grace and honor. Amin.

The Waiting Period

One of the hardest thing a person- muslim or non muslim- has to go through is the death of a marriage. Marriage is one of the most beautiful insitutions in the world. When two people come together who are willing 2 grow and committ to each other for life, it can be a blissful union and children can thrive in that union. However, when all options have been exhausted and when it becomes painfully obvious that two people cannot work cohessively as one, divorce becomes the necessary evil that must be done.

People take the end of a marriage differently. Some have celebrations (divorce parties) where they either drink themselves to a stupor or bash their former spouse as if they had no good memories. Some go into full frontal obsession, afraid of or refusing 2 let go of a marriage that they've been in 4 so long. Neither one of these paths bring closure because it only masks the hurt.

I'm now accepting the fact that my marriage is over. It was not even salvageable. May Allah grant my ex healing in his heart and may he find his way back to fully practicing the deen correctly. I am realizing that my soul, my heart and my mind need healing as well. It means having to start over both in my deen and in my life. May Allah give me the ease.

I truly believe that failure is important in order for a person to succeed. If there are no failures in life, there will be no motivation for success. To be honest, I experienced my first dose of failure when failed my premath test in college. It was a reminder that if I was going to be truly successful in college, I was going to actually have to be realistic and put actual effort in my work to get an education. This culture is afraid to fail because it would force people to recognize and appreciate what they have. Our culture is raising a generation of children who think that life is an entitlement and not something you should work for. I do believe that the limited freedom to fail could affect our society and government because it breeds incompetent officials and tyranical rulers.

I am concerned that if the freedom to fail is not allowed, there will be no new inventions of products and new ways of thinking. There will be no one to step up to the challenges of our governments who treat us wrong, no new artists who create art work, and no protests on the streets. So how do we stop this ever growing trend towards laziness and elitism? It's as simple as getting your children actively involved in their school projects and not having the parents do the assignments. It is having a game in athletics where there is a clear winner and the loser shakes hands and learns to loose with humility, for both the winner and loser learn good sportsmanship. In the midist of trial and error when creating projects, it helps to know what your consumers really need. The freedom to fail also provides motivation for creativity and increases competncy for success. When we make these small changes, we can then have the absolute freedom to fail.

Eid Mubarak 2 all and Ramadan Reflections

As salaamu alikum 2 all my fellow bloggers. It's been about a month since I posted any thing up and in a way that's a good thing . I needed 2 take a break from posting anything during Ramadan. So now that I'm back, I would like 2 put up some reflections that I have learned during Ramadan.

Fasting- this ramadan, I have improved on my fasting and learned to give myself some slack. Instead of doing cold turkey fasting, which I lasted only two weeks, I fasted every three days and fed the hungry when I could.
Reading Quran- I finally got a list of what the 30 parts (aka Juz) of the quran are and started reading them in order. I completed 29 of the 30 Juz of Quran.
First times - for the first time, I stayed for the night of power (I lasted til 1 am ) and I spent the last ten day in a masjid, reading quran and learning more islamic lessons along the way.

I survived Ramadan and did slightly better than I did last year, mashaallah. Until next Ramadan...

It seems that America's addition to fast food is quickly expanding our waistlines and sending us to an early grave. In the piece, it shows places like McDonald's offering salads, just because they offer salads does not necessarily guarantee that the salad is healthy either. Some of McDonald's dressings and salads have as much calories as their Big Macs and Cheeseburgers. Let's be honest, it's time to go back making our meals at home and knowing where our food is coming from. I'm liking and appreciating the local food movement as well as getting my meats from Halal butchers. Our country wants their lives and food done quick, fast and in a hurry.

Both Silent and Angry Protests Take Place Against Facebook

Yesterday, I took one day off from Facebook as most Muslims did, because facebook allow a contest called draw Mohammed day. But some countries took it a step further. Pakistan interrupted both Facebook and Youtube service. Thousands of muslimahs and muslims took to the streets demanding that both websites be banned in their country for allowing the site to continue with this group. As of this posting, Facebook has since shut the group down and has kicked off the member who created it.

I checked FB today and found that very few Muslims have logged backed on to the website. Inshaallah, Facebook and Youtube will learn to think before they allow such groups to enter.

Masha'Allah, I've been blessed with another day, another hour, another minute, another second to make some decisions in my life. I know I've been on this earth for 25 years and the things I thought I knew about life are the very things that are proving me wrong. Before I became a Muslim, I was a Christian woman thinking that as long as i repented and accepted Jesus as my savior before

Soon on May 15 it will be one year since I converted to Islam and I've really been thinking about what I have learned as well as what I still have to learn. What is really important and who matters in my life still linger in the memories of my head. I know when I die I will have to answer for all the rights and wrongs I've done. Two angels will ask me three questions:

What do you believe?
What is your religion?
Who is your prophet?

Every Muslim will face these three questions. If they answer correctly they are one step closer to paradise. If they answer incorrectly, they face the hellfire. After the questioning is done, there lies the book of deeds. The Book of Deeds are the lists of the bad and good deeds a Muslim has done in the past life on earth. Whatever hand it lands on can make a persons hair turn grey. Now that's something that weighs on my mind more than anything else.

In the month of January, I experienced two things that gave me a reminder that as a human being no one is guaranteed the next day, hour or even minute.

On January 8th, me and my husband got into a car accident. Another car hit the passengers side of the car, hitting my side. Firefighters had to use the "jaws of life" to get me out of the car. We both left with our lives. Two weeks later, we were on the train when it derailed off the track, leaning towards the expressway below. The train conductor was able to drive on one track to the next train station.

The lessons I learned from those two experiences is that it's by the grace and mercy of Allah that he spared everyone's lives that day. Mashallah.

2010: A New Decade

May Allah bring peace and blessings upon everyone. Believe it or not, we made it through the first ten years of the millennium. We've gone from the Y2K scare to just about everybody and they mama having a blog, Facebook or tweeting every little fact and detail about their lives. But in the first ten years of the millennium, I have started to see scary trends as the digital age started to bloom.

The Death of Privacy. Celebrities and flashing cameras everywhere following them to the latest eateries and stores. Tabloids use them as fodder to get people to buy them. Reality television has gone from something of substance, like True Life and The Real World, to something of utter train wreck and stupidity, like MTV's Jersey Shore and Bravo's Real Housewives series. In a way, it has cause generation y to be more obsessed with what's going on with only them than about what's going on with others and the world around them.
The Birth of Ignorance and Fear. Eight years of the Bush Administration proved that when powers go unchecked, it can bring about disastrous consequences. When the attacks of September 11^th, 2001 happened it gave the administration the power to search people's homes without a search warrant, wiretap phone conversations without a search warrant and to arrest innocent people for no reason. Two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan only brought bloodshed and they could not find the supposed 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden. Anyone who spoke out against the war was at best called unpatriotic and at worst was put on a no-fly list. Worst of all, Muslims and minorities suffered the worse under the Bush Administration. For African Americans, it was the improper handling of Hurricane Katrina. For the Hispanic community, it was the crackdown on illegal immigration and the battles of the drug cartels for money and power. For Muslims, it was the constant racial profiling and discrimination, the name calling as well as false imprisonment, the raiding of our masjids by the FBI and the blacklisting of Islamic organizations from receiving donations for their supposed "ties to terrorism."
The Blurring Line. America has turned into a country where its citizens have failed to distinguish the difference between what is free and what is demoralizing and oppressive. The Internet has become a battling ground over what is public and what is private.

Only Allah knows what the next ten years will bring. May Allah Bring peace and blessings to you and yours, Muslimah.

Ah yes, it's been nine months since I have worn the niqab and i find myself having mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I'm practicing modesty and men do not disrespect me. but on the other hand, being a niqabi is a battle of an American Muslimahs place in society and what is acceptable. Behind the veil, I find myself battling to do right in my deen, to actually practice my beliefs in public and not be a coward or a hypocrite. The things I used to I can do no longer, like talking to men openly. Futhermore, I must always ask my husbands permission on everything. Insha'Allah, I will do better in actions as well as words.

Making sense of the Fort Hood tragedy

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

It has been a very devastating few days for the community of Ft. Hood, Texas. On November 5, Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan went on a shooting rampage, killing 13 people. A majority of his victims who are wounded are still in the hospital, their conditions ranging from stable to critical. According to published reports, Hasan was a military psychologist and the reason for his shooting rampage was that he was scheduled for deployment in Afghanistan and he couldn't take it any more. He was showing signs of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD.

As I watched the events, I knew it was going to be open season on Muslims, specifically those who are serving in the military. Within 48 hours of the attack of Ft. Hood, the Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has had numerous threats and complaints on both their website and at their North Texas campus alone. Plus, countless islamic organizations like CAIR have come out to condemn Hasan's actions and saying that Islam never condones such violent and senseless acts .

However, there are bigger issues besides Hasan's religious beliefs. This attack exposes the millitary's lack of preparedness when it comes to soldiers suffering from PTSD. Hasan was showing countless signs that mentally as well as psychologically he was not ready to deploy for Afganistan. The Ft. Hood tragedy is only the list of disaters the US military can rack up in their failure to treat soldiers with PTSD. Another example is the Ft. Carson murders in which 14 soldiers have been convicted of murder since 2005; in all of these cases these solider were suffering from PTSD caused by their multiple tours of duty in Iraq and Afganistan. The bigger question is what is the military doing to help these soldiers. The answer to this what soldiers call the "cookie-cutter treatment" where they are given antidepressants after waiting hours for a 20 minute session with their doctor.

Even though PTSD does not excuse these soldiers actions, it does make me realize that the military is partly responsible for the downfall of these soldiers by not providing adquate counseling, support, and treatment. The military can say all they want they are working in the best intrest of their soldiers, but their actions are proving otherwise.

Going Through Changes

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

When I converted into Islam, i went into it with realistic expectations. I realized that I was going to go through trails and tribulations, that I wasn't always going to have good days and that not everybody was going to be perfect, including me. I also had to except that not everybody was going to understand that I wore hijab and niqab. Some people were going to act ignorant and decide to call me a terrorist to make themselves feel better. But I also found that if I had iman (faith) in Allah and applied the things i've learned, then my deen (belief) would be stronger and I would pass on what I did learn unto others.

So, I like to leave this blog with a quote that I find myself saying on a daily basis whenever, the times get hard and you feel like you cannot make it. Always remember this:

"Allah does not charge a man with more than He has given him; He will bring ease after hardship." Quran al-Talaq 65:7

Something to think about…

As I write this blog, I sit and think about the things we devote ourselves to. As women and men, we look physically grown, but what about emotionally? When I was a little girl, I wanted to be an adult because I thought they got to have all the fun and got to stay up to stay up all night. I didn't understand that being grown meant doing things you never thought you had to do – whether it be paying bills or being a wife. Perhaps, I forgot that being grown also meant that as we want to leave the past behind us, we must face the never ending truth that at some point we will have forgiveness, but that does not exempt us from punishment.

This rings no truer than in marriage. On October 24, 2009 I made my marriage official with my husband-both Islamic-wise and legal-wise. Marriage is the ultimate test of maturity and adulthood because from day to day, you and your spouse have to deal with each other. Sex is as mandatory as conversation, children come into play and you find yourself realizing that marriage never has, nor will ever be, a fairy tale. Every now and again there will be fights and yes, you will get on each other's nerves. But in the long term, marriage is a commitment and an institution worth fighting for.

Regaining Focus

I'm sorry if I've been a little busy not to write on the blog lately. Insha'Allah, the updates will get more frequent on weekly basis. Lately, I have taken a self-assessment on how I've been doing since I became a Muslimah in May of this year. I realize that I have some work to do. But everyday, I find myself leaving with less stress and I'm at peace much more than I ever been. When I wear niqab and hijab, I find myself humbled and liberated, never oppressed. Futhermore, Allah has blessed me with a husband who makes me laugh and focus on strengthening my deen.

Making it through the rain

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

There is something to be said when storms come into our lives. Allah puts them there for a reason, a reason sometimes we will never understand or know.

Last week, I made it through a week flooding that hit the state of Georgia, mashallah. The above picture shows the Chattahoochee River flooding near the Fulton/Cobb county line. This photo was taken near the natural forest site, a popular destination for fisherman. As of this posting, the park is still closed due to sustained flood damage.

I saw on the news stations how people were crying over the loss of their homes and their belongings. It is a sad thing, yes; however these people who survived the floods should be grateful that Allah (swt) gave them the gift of life .and that Allah will continue to provide for them. For it is said:

"O you who believe! Remember Allah's favor to you, how a people formed to design to stretch out their hands against you but He withheld their hands from you; and keep your duty to Allah. In Allah let believers put their trust."

(Quran Surah Al-Maida 5:11)

The Last days of Ramadan

Happy Ramadan to you and yours. Ramadan ends this Sunday and I'm sad to see it go. I learned a lot from my first Ramadan and to be honest, I have a lot of work to do. I had to pull out of Ramadan because I got severely sick. I wanted so badly to participate, to continue on, but my husband saw it and he said not to participate this year. Then he got sick and the masjid told him not to participate either. Insha'Allah, we'll get better at fasting. So in lieu of fasting, we made financial contributions so the masjid can continue with the nightly dinners they give during Ramadan.

Eight Years Later…

In the name of Allah, Most

Today is a hard day for me, as it is with all Americans. It is the eight year anniversary of the attacks that happened on September 11, 2001. The irony of this day is that when 18 extremists attacked the World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and crashed a plane in Pennsylvania it changed Muslim lives too. It put us in a position where we had to defend our faith and explain what true jihad (holy war) really is. With this being said, it's time that the truth really is told about Islam and terrorism.

Islam never has supported terrorism. In Islam, it is haram (forbidden) to kill innocent people, specifically women and children. The Prophet Muhammad (May peace and blessings be upon him) forbid it. Allah has never supported the senseless killing of people for his cause and it will not be rewarded in Paradise.
Muslims can and will change the image of Islam. We have the power to disprove the extremists. How? By doing something as simple as saying hello and introducing yourself to your neighbors. When people ask a question about our religion, we willingly answer. And if we don't have the answer, we direct them to a place where they can find the answers, whether it is going to the nearest masjid, the public library, or going online. Insha'Allah (if Allah wills), I will post up links soon to websites on Islam.
Read up on the good things Muslims are doing. There are excellent books out there about Islam, what it is really all about. One of the books I'm reading right now is What's Right with Islam by Fiesal Rauf.
